What Do Methodists Believe?

We believe in the Bible.
United Methodists join all Christians in viewing the Bible as the primary source and norm for Christian belief and conduct.

We believe in Jesus Christ.
Jesus is more than the perfect teacher, moral example, compassionate preacher or lovable wonderworker. He is all of these, but above all He is the Son of God, through Jesus alone we have access to God the Father.

We believe in people.
United Methodists join all Christians in holding fast to the God-given goodness that is in every human being.

We believe in the centrality of love.
Jesus showed us with absolute finality that without the love of God no life can stand, and with that love no life can fail.

Active in the Community
At Algiers UMC we are committed to serving the community of Algiers Point.

Jesus once said "Love your neighbor as yourself". In keeping with His will we believe in loving our neighbors through programs like S.T.A.I.R. (Start The Adventure In Reading, an after school reading tutorial for Behrman Elementary second-graders), the House of Ruth established as a nonprofit organization ten years ago to assist homeless families and individuals in our community. They provide transitional housing for those who have lost their home through tragedy, loss of employment, eviction, etc. The staffprovide counseling in all aspects of life. Every effort is made to assist those in need, financially and otherwise, to become self supporting. United Churches of Algiers, Emergency Fund, Inc. provides a food bank and thrift store to the Algiers community. We also sponsor and participate in the Feed the Hungry program.

Suffer the Little Children
Jesus said, "Suffer the little children to come unto me, for the kingdom of heaven is made for such as these". We believe in nurturing the precious new lives of children which have been entrusted to our care by God.

Fellowship
At Algiers UMC we are also dedicated to having fun. Good food and fellowship are ever-present at our many social gatherings. Coffee and donuts every Sunday between Sunday school and church services, covered dish dinners, picnics, fall festival, Christmas party... The list is endless. We know how to "pass a good time" at Algiers UMC.

There are also chances to socialize within the various church groups.

• U.M.W (United Methodist Women) is concerned primarily with the support of missions. This includes individual growth, spiritual enrichment, and education for mission programs throughout the U.S. and around the world.

• U.M.M. (United Methodist Men) meet on Saturday once a month.

• J.O.Y. Club (Just Over Youth) - The social needs of our seniors are not overlooked. One of our most enjoyable groups are our loving senior adults who so faithfully support our church. The J.O.Y. Club meets the third Wednesday of each month. They have lunch and a program after.

Aside from the regular meetings of these groups are special get-togethers for fun and fellowship. Watch for the information in the Sunday bulletin and newsletter about these activities.

A Warm and Loving Place to Worship
